Geology training: Reaching Out to Youth on the Making Minerals Valuable Activity

Geology is the gateway to exploration and is also an important part of earth sciences for school children. AMEP 2 in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Heavy Industry has taken steps to provide young people with an opportunity to learn more about their natural environment and the value of minerals and metals that are used in their daily lives and communities. A short 3-part course has been developed by AMEP 2 under its Making Minerals Valuable activity to engage both students and teachers in the soums of Altanshiree, Khuld, and Buregkhangai on natural and earth sciences.

Geology educators have engaged students and teachers in the task of rock collecting, sorting, identification, and testing. The program has provided each school with geology kits and accompanying learning materials and teachers guides as well as magnifying glasses and other tools of the trade. The program has inspired several students and as one student pointed out, “I am really interested in geology and would like to become a geologist when I finish school here”. There are about 400 students and teachers from Altanshiree, Khuld and Buregkhangai that have participated in the program since its inception on March 2023.
