Methodological Guidelines IV

In partnership with the MMHI, AMEP 2 engaged the Center for Mineral Resources, Geo-information and Training of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology to develop methodological guidelines for geologists to standardize exploration techniques and reporting of five key minerals, namely cobalt-nickel, manganese, beryllium, chromium, and phosphate. The widespread use of such standardised reporting of mineral reserves and resources based on these guidelines contributes to greater efficiency, transparency, and clarity of the reserve and resource registration process.

As approved by the Decree No. A/195, 2018 of Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry, the project methodological guidelines for the application of the mineral resources and reserve classification were planned to be developed for more than 30 mineral types based on their importance in geological research, mining production, and contribution to the country’s economy, including high-tech raw materials, as well as the most common minerals resources, which could have potential in the future.

With these additional five guidelines, a total of 17 mineral guidelines have been developed with the support of the AMEP 2. These are gold, iron, fluorspar, placer, oil guidelines developed in 2019, aluminum, graphite, carbonate, sand and gravel, salt, rare earth elements, lithium-cesium recommendations developed in 2021, and phosphate, manganese, beryllium, nickel-cobalt, chromium guidelines in 2022.

As a result of the AMEP 2 activity, approximately 1,500 geologists who are conducting exploration work under licenses have been following the guidelines and adopting the recommendations. Each month, the Professional Minerals Council (PMC) of Mongolia gathers twice or three times and reviews 25 to 30 reports. The report authors including about 100 geologists refer to the guidelines to justify their works and prove their findings in the report for the PMC members. Authors must write the specific guidelines used for the report in the Introduction Section of the document and these reports have been archived.

By developing these guidelines, AMEP 2 has helped build common understanding not only among geologists and miners but also the members of PMC. The guidelines assist reduce disputes amongst the members of PMC over exploration methodology.
