Reaching Out to Youth on the Making Mining Valuable Activity
Minerals and metals are valuable as they are key to supporting our daily existence. As part of our Making Mining Valuable Activity, AMEP 2 in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Heavy Industry and other key partners and participants, has started undertaken an exciting series of local soum level activities in Altanshiree, Khuld and Buregkhangai. These activities are focused on engaging youths between the ages of 12 to 16 in learning about geology, and the millions of years of events and changes that rocks have played a role in their community’s history. Alongside enthusiastic teachers, young participants were guided by 3 educational experts in geology on activities involving rock identification, rock creation and formation, and on the material uses of minerals and metals found in rocks. Youths were engaged in discussions around rocks as central to todays’ evolving society, their role in the mine life cycle, and in recycling and energy transition for the future.
The Geology educators started their journey on March 02 working with a total of 145 teachers and youths in the secondary schools in Altanshiree and Khuld. They currently enroute to visit to Buregkhangai and its secondary school. Some of the exciting results of this activity has been a keen interest by students in the possibility of geology or STEM being and interesting and relatable career choice.
Future school visits are scheduled to continue through the months of April, May, and June. This activity is part of a larger series of community focused activities on Making Mining Valuable in the 3 selected soums.
