Mongolia’s Extractives Sector Develops Online Training Modules on Human Rights and Gender Issues

The Australian Government is pleased to support the Mongolian Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industries in its effort to implement its gender policy in the extractives sector. Led by the “Women in Mineral Sector” NGO, industry, government, and civil society partners gather on November 19th in Ulaanbaatar to discuss and pilot the first two of a 7-series online training modules on gender and human rights issues.

Ms. Tsetsen, D., presents the training module 1 that addresses identity issue. “Understanding one’s identity is an essential first step that leads to career choices, important life decisions, and to become an individual who respects diverse members of a society,” said Ms. Tsetsen. The mining sector veteran, Baigalmaa Shurka, is the trainer of module 4 and shared her experiences on the benefits of basing the organization’s values and policies on gender-sensitive and human rights principles.

The development of e-learning program on gender issues in the mining sector is one of ten activities Australia Mongolia Extractives Program (AMEP 2) supports in 2021-2022. This activity aims to raise awareness of the policy and give companies in the mining sector tools to operationalize the policy’s key measures.  A series of handbooks was produced by the Canadian SESMIM project and this activity, through a partnership with the “Women in Mineral Sector” NGO and MMHI, will transform that content into e-learning modules.  This will enable the training material to have greater reach and flexibility.
